Choosing a School Furniture Supplier You Can Actually Rely On

Buying school furniture isn't complicated, but it's easy to get wrong. The most common mistake? Treating it like ordinary furniture buying. A desk that seems perfectly solid in a showroom will tell a different story after two years of pupils dragging it across a classroom floor every day. Chairs that stack neatly in a catalogue photo don't always stack neatly in reality. And anything that isn't sized correctly for the age group using it creates problems that last the entire time it's in the building.

We only stock furniture built to BS EN 1729, which is the British and European standard for school furniture strength and safety. 

What we're really looking at when we recommend something to a school is whether it lasts, whether it fits the pupils using it, and whether a teacher can rearrange the room in five minutes without it becoming a large task.

Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Sixth Forms - They're All Different

A chair that's right for a Year 9 pupil is completely wrong for a Year 2. Get the sizing wrong and you've spent the budget on furniture that's uncomfortable and potentially bad for posture which is not ideal.

For primary schools we focus on correctly sized tables and chairs, storage that younger children can actually reach and use themselves, and reading corner seating that feels like somewhere you'd actually want to sit. The details matter more than they seem.

Secondary schools need things that are harder to damage, which is a polite way of saying they need to be genuinely robust. Our secondary range covers heavy-duty classroom desks, science lab stools, task chairs, and breakout seating for common rooms that doesn't immediately look like it belongs in a waiting room.

Chairs from Postura+ and Titan cover most classroom seating needs. They stack properly, which sounds basic but matters enormously at the end of a school day. Our tables have fully welded or crush-bent frames with laminate tops that don't mark badly and wipe down easily. Storage is built around the Gratnells tray system, which most schools already know and use. We also stock folding exam furniture that genuinely stores flat and doesn't require an organisational effort to set up.

A lot of schools order furniture based on what they think will fit, and discover after delivery that the layout doesn't quite work. How do I know what size to order? BS EN 1729 sets out sizing based on age and height. Size 5 is typically right for early secondary, Size 6 for older pupils and adults. If you are unsure you can tell us the age groups you're buying for and we'll advise, or we handle it automatically if you use our space planning service.

Can we pay by purchase order? Yes. Email fox@chequeredfox.co.uk with your PO and we'll take it from there and talk through the next steps. 

What are the lead times? This depends on what you're ordering and how much. A lot of the popular lines are in stock. If you're planning a summer refurbishment, contact us in the spring. September has a habit of arriving faster than expected.
